Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Rolf Treu has thrown a monkey wrench into the gears of modern liberalism. This week, he ruled that the laws governing the job security of teachers are unconstitutional. That’s right. He decided that tenure laws allow incompetent teachers to stay in the classroom, which in turn harm low-income, minority students.
“The evidence is compelling,” he wrote. “Indeed, it shocks the conscience.”
The 16-page decision stops the state from laying off teachers based on seniority, and it stops the practice of protecting teachers from being fired once theyÂ’ve been on the job for 18 months.
Teachers unions are furious. Randi Weingarten, head of the American Federation of Teachers, calls the ruling “a sad day for public education.” She complains that thousands of teachers will lose job security due to a few rotten apples. Other union officials accuse the judge of buying anti-union rhetoric and promoting an anti-teacher narrative.
David Welch is the Silicon Valley entrepreneur who funded the nonprofit group “Students Matter” which brought the lawsuit. He says the case was designed to change “the current laws that fail our children.” The state promises to appeal.
Under the current system, it can take years and tens of thousands of dollars to get rid of incompetent teachers. Dues-paying, incompetent teachers who fund the union treasuries that fund the Democrat party. So you can see why the teachers unions — and the state, run by Democrats — want to keep this system in place. Forever. The failing kids are an afterthought. Excrement happens.
