RUSH: You know, I’m watching Obama. He’s at the LBJ library. The speech here is marking the 50 years since the enactment of the Civil Rights Act. You know what he said? He said, “As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, we honor the men and women who made it possible,” which is a big switch because normally he attacks Republicans. (interruption)
No, the Democrats didn’t pass the Civil Rights Act. This is one of the big myths of recent American history. The Democrats were the segregationists. Do you know that a greater percentage of Republican senators voted for the Civil Rights Act than Democrats? I mean, I saw Doris Kearns Goodwin on TV the other day. You know, she got very close to LBJ — I mean, ahem, really close — doing research. (You know what I mean by “really close.”)
They loved LBJ ’cause he was a bully. He was a bully, and he was working the phones. The story was he was pounding the pavement. He was calling Democrats night and day trying to convince them to vote for this, ’cause they were segregationists. The Democrats were the KKK. The Democrats were Bull Connor, the dogs, and the fire hoses. It’s one of the most amazing historical reversals ever.
