Pilot: Stand on Shoulders of the Tuskegee Airmen

by Rush Limbaugh - Apr 6,2012

RUSH: Here’s Tony in Dayton, Ohio. It’s great to have you on the program, sir, hello.

CALLER: Hello, Rush. It’s a pleasure to talk to you. I know we only have a minute so this will be real quick. I happen to be a pilot, a retired military pilot. I’m very proud of that. I happen to be black. I waited and changed my day-to-day just to speak to you and your audience. This stuff about race has gotta stop. If we want to look at people that we want to emulate, I would just like to draw people’s attention to the Tuskegee airmen and one of my heroes: Benjamin O. Davis Jr. Those guys are the reason that I got to wear wings, and they’re the reason I got to serve my country. And they were great Americans. And they didn’t complain about anything. And the last thing I want to say is that my parents grew up in Jim Crow. They taught me to pay my own way. Do not have anyone else pay. Pay your own way.

RUSH: Tony, let me ask you a quick question. I’ve got about 45 seconds here. Snerdley said something to me today. He thinks that this stuff, the way they’re playing the Trayvon Martin case, he thinks they’re overplaying their hand. They can’t rabble-rouse the whole country any more with this made-up stuff. Do you think that’s true?

CALLER: I would agree with that because the only time I’ve ever agreed with Geraldo was when, on the air, he said he told his son not to wear a hoodie ’cause you look like a thug. I’ll just tell you that plenty of times —

RUSH: He apologized for that.

CALLER: (laughing)

RUSH: He apologized. He didn’t want to offend anyone. He brought the parents in and apologized.

CALLER: I don’t have to apologize. I told my children a lot of times: “You know, you need to look a certain way. Don’t go around looking like you’re not.” So I would say that there’s a lot of people there that can see that they’re overplaying their hand.

RUSH: I hope you’re right. I’ve been hoping for this for 23 years. I’m not so sure, but I hope. I hope you’re right. But, man, I’ll tell you, folks: He is so right about paying your own way. It’s one of those things people say, “Well, easy for you to say.” That is the essence of freedom, by the way. Paying your own way means you’re not dependent on anybody else, and that’s liberating. Believe me.
