Well! While some of you were out shopping for Christmas, others in New York were scrambling,trying to find health insurance. That’s because one New York’s biggest unions, the 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, dropped coverage for the children of more than 30,000 members. And these 30,000 members are not the “well-off” union members; they’re the low-wage home attendants –union members who are scraping to get by. The poor. The downtrodden. The oppressed.
The union informed their members that, as of January 1st, they’re on their own when it comes to providing health insurance for their kids. The union blames New York State for making them buy coverage from a third party, which raised premiums by 60 percent. But the state denies forcing the union to switch health insurers,and says the union’s health care fund was already financially troubled. The union admits it faced a $15 million deficit next year, and more in coming years, if they were to continue insuring the children of their members.
