Democrat leaders on the House Judiciary Committee– John Conyers of Michigan, Jerrold Nadler of New York, and Bobby Scott of Virginia– have introduced a billthat would significantly weaken our ability to track down terrorists under the Patriot Act.
One measure would stop intelligence agencies from spying on so-called lone wolves. These are non-US citizens who are suspected of being terrorists, but are not a part of recognized terror groups. Another provision would make it more difficult to track suspected terrorists using “roving wiretaps”. A third proposal would place roadblocks in the way of seizing records related to terror investigations.
In addition to all this, the retroactive immunity given to the phone companies who legally complied with Bush administration effortswould be repealed, forcing those businesses to defend their actions in court.
Now, it’shard to imagine, given the history of supposed lone wolves like Lee Harvey Oswald or Timothy McVeigh, why Democrats would oppose intelligence agencies keeping tabs on them. It’s also difficult to understand why Democrats insist on persecuting the telephone companies that helped keep this country stay safe after 9/11.
But ever since we were struck, liberal Democrats have been on the attack…not against the terrorists who killed thousands of Americans, but against the agencies who brought the killers to justice –and against the laws that prevented more attacks. This is all an outgrowth of the left’s out-of-control hatred for George Bush, and now, with Obama in office, these fringe liberal kooksmay actually prevail.
