Twenty million Americans live in “manufactured homes,”known as mobile homes. Trailers. Now, many of those homes have been manufactured without installed weather radios — that is, until now.

This week, the House passed a bill that would require homebuilders– who aren’t having a hard enough time(enough, as it is) — to install National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather radios in mobile homes.

Now, according to the bill, residents of manufactured homes have a fatality rate during storms over ten times greater than people who live in permanent structures. The sponsors of this measure say thatthe radios, which cost between 30 and 80 bucks apiece, will save lives.

This is a start, folks,but this bill falls short. It’s one thing to have a government-mandated weather radio in your trailer — but that’s not enough. We need a companion law to make the residents of those homes actually turn on the radioand listen to it! What good’shaving it in there if you don’t turn it on? It’s got to be on all day, every day! And if nobody’s going to make you use it, what’s the point in having it?

And why are the people who live in permanent domiciles excluded? I mean, sure, the death rate’s higher for those intrailers, but we all face death during storms;don’t our lives count for anything? I mean, if a government-mandated weather channel is good enough for the mobile homedweller,it ought to be good enough for everybody.

Storms don’t discriminate — just like UFOs.And our nanny government should not discriminate either!
