According to an unnamed White House official, President Obama is working on a plan to give the Commerce Department the authority to create an Internet ID for Americans. News of the initiative was published before the Arizona carnage, so there’s no telling what current plans are, but Commerce Secretary Gary Locke claims the Internet ID will notbe a “government-controlled system” like a national ID card.
White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt says the Commerce Department is “the absolute perfect spot in the US government” to create an “identity ecosystem” for the Internet. What’s an “identity ecosystem”? Who knows. We also don’t know any details of the new policy, which won’t be “a government-controlled system” — even though the government is planning it and it will be run by a government agency.
The White House Cyber Czar said anonymity will remain “possible” on the Internet, and getting a government Internet ID will be voluntary; also, there’s no chance “a centralized database will emerge.” (Yeah. Just like there was no chance the government would take over large swaths of the banking or automotive sectors.)
This is the regime that lives by the motto, “Never let a serious crisis go to waste.” The mad ramblings of the Arizona gunman are posted all over the Internet, and the pathetic left is — predictably –blaming conservatives for the shootings. So who knows what final form this Internet ID will take, but don’t count on the civil liberties crowd to object… becausethere’s a Democrat in the White House now.
